Many claim that Opus One is too expensive at $55 a taste or $365 a bottle, well if you come to sip on wine, then perhaps it is. The winery needs little help on selling out each vintage year after year. More than half of its production will be enjoyed by wine lovers in Asia and Europe. Nowadays, even at an annual production of 25,000 cases, Opus One insists on no wine club membership. Cult wine is a group of wealthy individual with very expensive tastes for wines, often spending hundreds of thousands dollars on high-end wine for consumption, collection and even investments. In the 1990s, Opus One forever imprinted its name as part of the California Cult Wine. It didn’t take very long to Opus One to find its way to the heart of many wine lovers world wide. Napa Valley wine country was no longer the same. In 1981, the first annual Auction-for-Charity was organized in Napa Valley one bid was for a case of Opus One topped out as the most expensive at $24,000. Since, for a very long time, a bottle of Opus One was the most expensive wine in the entire valley at $50 each, which is roughly about $200 in today value. The winery released its first vintage in 1984, 5 years after its first harvest in 1979. The turning point for this wonderful transformation took place at the rise of Opus One. In just a few decades, Napa Valley has gone through a complete transformation from inexpensive jug-wine to world renowned wine destination. This 2006 represents cellared Opus at its best: Bursting with life yet showing the nuances of age, it's a must-have for collectors of all stripes. No Wine region in the world has experienced such rapid growth than Napa Valley, California. Robert Parker calls it not only “one of the great wines of Napa,” but “the pinnacle of French viticultural knowledge combined with that of California and Napa’s Shangri La-like microclimate.” Grown on the estate’s four vineyard plots-the Ballestra and River Parcels, which flank the winery, as well as To Kalon North and South across Highway 29-the Left Bank-style blend is one of the most coveted, envied, and emulated wines on the planet. The Opus One story began when Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of Bordeaux First Growth Mouton Rothschild) conceived of a Bordeaux-Napa Valley project. We’re thrilled to announce that our visit yielded the kind of allocation that normally only comes at auction: a rare allocation of 2006 Opus One. Everyone in the company headed north on Silverado Trail to the Oakville AVA, to make our first official visit to the pristine winery that brought First Growth Bordeaux and the best of Napa Valley together: Opus One. So on a beautiful August day, the Wine Access offices in the town of Napa emptied. But realistically, we’d been looking forward to it for years. Technically, we’d had the appointment for about a month.
